Beware, possible spoilers!
The second season of The Rings of Power began with flashbacks to the beginning of the Second Age, when Sauron attempted to seize power after the fall of Morgoth.
However, this isn’t the same overlord that viewers saw in previous episodes. The new Sauron was played by a different actor, and this may be just one of the roles he’ll take on in the series.
The first version of the character was played by Charlie Vickers, the second went to Dunkirk and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden.

And that’s not all, because as the story progresses, the villain changes shape again – this time appearing as a god-like being named Annatar, who strangely resembles Halbrand with elf ears.
Why does Sauron change his appearance?
What at first glance seems like a plot hole is actually an ingenious decision by the writers.
In the form of a man, the antagonist managed to hide from Adar, who destroyed his past physical incarnation, and get close to Celebrimbor.
After Galadriel discovered the truth, she ordered the elf not to approach Halbrand, though she did not explain why.
Entering the workshop is half the battle; convincing the smith to trust and forge that same ring is much harder. For this, Sauron became Annatar.

He explained to Celebrimbor that from the very beginning he had been pursuing a good purpose: to send him divine inspiration and guide him on the path to greatness, and since they had come so close, there was no point in distorting the truth anymore.
This is how the dark lord cleverly used the elf’s pride to obtain the ring of omnipotence.
