Sometimes a box office fiasco is just the beginning.
Not all films become hits immediately after their release in theaters. Some of them fail miserably at the box office, disappointing not only the audience but also the studios. However, the age of DVDs and home video gives such films a second chance.
Some films, despite box office failures, later managed to capture the attention of viewers when they were released on disc. These unexpected successes proved that the fate of a film is not always decided on the day of its premiere. Our list includes 10 films that did not make it to theaters but still found their audience on home screens.
The box office success of films is influenced by many factors, and the quality of the film itself is far from the most decisive aspect. It still depends on what the news agenda is and who is vying for the viewer’s attention. Many films suffered from unfair competition, such as the Marvel blockbusters. But ‘Donnie Darko’ also suffered from the fact that a scene with a plane crash was included in the marketing campaign – and all this in September 2001, against the backdrop of the horrific terrorist attacks in New York.
However, the DVD release (and now the digital release on streaming) helps many unfairly underrated films to find their audience and even become a cult. The example of “Fight Club” is one of the most striking. Today it is hard to imagine that this hit with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt could not have been released in theaters.
