Film and television are constantly changing, and what seemed normal a few years ago can be experienced very differently today. With the development of society and its values, people began to look at many things in a new way, and modern viewers are much more attentive to many aspects that would have been much easier to perceive twenty years ago.
We have collected 10 series that have become cult, but today they probably wouldn’t dare to make them. In some places the humor is hopelessly outdated, in other places some topics would simply be considered offensive today, and in other places the format is simply not the right one. These projects were daring and provocative, but times have changed, and so have tastes. But as products of their time, these series are still good – even legendary.
Does our selection mean that TV series that would not be made today are bad? Of course not: a dedicated lover of quality television will immediately understand that this is a selection of true modern classics.
Today’s studios, however, prefer a cautious approach: revenue and economy come first, and artistic achievement and place in history will follow. Perhaps this is why there are so few new series that stick in the viewers’ minds for long.
Even shows that get a shot at a first season can easily be canceled: getting decent ratings isn’t enough, studios demand absolute triumph to continue the stories. Are you not “Wednesday,” “Stranger Things,” or a “Game of Thrones” prequel? Then step aside.
