Let’s not recall the downright ridiculous historical films again: it is better to note the truly successful films.
Historical films are not only cinematic attractions, but also an attempt to convey the spirit of the times and important events of the past. Of course, not all films can boast of accuracy in detail and truthfulness in depicting the era.
We have collected 8 films that have received recognition not only from viewers, but also from professional historians. These films are praised for their high level of realism, attention to detail and accurate depiction of events – so that even history buffs can safely watch them without fear of shutting down halfway through.
It’s interesting to note that one of the highest-grossing films in cinema history, Titanic, is also one of the most historically accurate. Cameron did extensive research before filming began, consulting with historians, studying surviving documents, and making multiple dives to the sunken ship to accurately recreate the Titanic’s exterior and interior.
To recreate the details, Cameron used archive plans of the ship, and many of the sets and interior items were painstakingly reproduced with documentary accuracy. A large-scale (though smaller, of course) replica of the ship was built especially for the film. Many of the deck and cabin scenes were filmed on specially constructed sets, which helped convey the atmosphere of luxury and tragedy that surrounded the passengers of the time.
All efforts paid off: ‘Titanic’ created a real sensation and became the first film to earn more than a billion dollars worldwide. Until the release of Avatar (also directed by James Cameron), Titanic remained the highest-grossing film in history.
