John Sayles’ independent film about a group of workers forming a union failed miserably at the box office, but Ryder still thinks it’s brilliant. The actress admitted that she was so impressed by Chris Cooper’s performance that she’s still inspired by it.

4. After Life, 1998

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s underrated masterpiece tells the story of a group of people trapped in purgatory. The creepy film with incredible acting had a strong impact on Ryder, so she started recommending it to all her friends and acquaintances.

3. Contemporary novel, 1981

Ryder is a big fan of director Albert Brooks, so the romantic drama about a couple who constantly fight and make up has long been at the top of her list of favorite films. The depressing film is criminally underrated in Russia, but fans of smart Hollywood cinema simply must see it.

Rating on Kinopoisk – 6.2

2. Lost in America, 1985

In second place is another Brooks film. A hilarious comedy about a married couple who decide to move into a mobile home has long been considered a cult classic in the United States, but Russian viewers have never been enthusiastic about the film. It has only 300 ratings on Kinopoisk!

Rating on Kinopoisk – 6.3

1. Goodbye Children, 1987

This creepy film by Frenchman Louis Malle is Ryder’s favorite film. The story of a Catholic priest who is executed in a concentration camp together with his children is ten times worse than Schindler’s List.

Rating on Kinopoisk – 7.7
