This sci-fi tale of smuggler Pluto Nash, who opened the galaxy’s best nightclub on the moon, was set to be another hit for Murphy, so Warner Bros. didn’t hesitate to spend a fortune on filming it.

The comedy film received an incredible budget 120 million dollars 20 of which were paid to Murphy as compensation. The producers were expecting Golden Globes and hundreds of millions of dollars in box office receipts, but Pluto Nash surprised everyone.

At the global box office, the sci-fi comedy collected only 7 million dollars. Yes, The Adventures of Pluto Nash is still considered one of the most unprofitable films in Hollywood history.

Murphy fans still can’t understand why audiences didn’t just go to the cinema. Even if the film was disgusting 5% “fresh” from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but Murphy fans went to see their favorite actor even when he played complete slugs.

Most likely, people are just tired of Murphy and his trademark humor – Pluto Nash’s terrible reviews were just the last straw for many viewers.

For his role as the “charming” smuggler, Murphy won a Golden Raspberry Award as worst actor of the decade, and Hollywood severed ties with him for nearly two decades.

Of course, Murphy played Donkey in Shrek and even won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in Dreamgirls, but the artist was no longer called to the forefront.

By the mid-2020s, however, Murphy’s career was finally taking off! The sequel to Coming to America is coming very soon, and Beverly Hills Cop 4 was released on Netflix this summer.
