George RR Martin pointed out the main mistake of “House of the Dragon”: they removed this character in vain

The writer is dissatisfied with HBO.

Let’s face it: House of the Dragon season 2 was noticeably worse than the first. The House Targaryen storylines have become even more confusing, and some characters’ actions are simply inexplicable. And it seems like fans know who to blame.

The showrunner of the second season was Ryan Condal – it was he who decided to leave out many of the characters and plot twists from the original book by George RR. Martina. The screenwriter tried to come up with his own original story and paid bitterly for it – Martin himself criticized his actions.

In a now-deleted post on the writer’s website, Not a Blog, Martin cast a critical eye over Condal’s decisions. He was shocked to see that one of his book’s most important characters, Prince Maelor Targaryen, son of Queen Helaine, had been omitted from the script for season two.

Yes, Helaena had a third child, but they decided to remove him from House of the Dragon entirely. Martin reasonably noted that the scene where the assassins Blood and Cheese ordered Helaine to choose which of her children to kill wasn’t as scary as it was in the book. And all of this is due solely to the absence of a third child.

Furthermore, Helaine’s suicide in the upcoming third season will make no sense without Maelor. She blamed herself for choosing Maelor as a sacrifice to Blood and Cheese, even though they would have killed Jaehaerys anyway.

And if Maelor really dies, the queen decides to commit suicide. According to Martin, this tragic storyline will be completely ruined by Condal next season, because Maelor can no longer be included in the series.

“In Ryan’s Season Three sketches, Helaina still kills herself… But for no specific reason. There’s no new horror, no event that could overwhelm the vulnerable young queen.” – Martin noted.

Despite its dubious second season, House of the Dragon is still considered one of the best TV shows to date. Nearly 620,000 Kinopoisk users gave it a rating of 8.1 points.
