But there is one important nuance.
Some countries love comedies, others Disney cartoons, and in South Korea the audience has a soft spot for horror.
That’s why the latter’s highest-grossing film of the year was a horror called The Curse of the Grave.
Director Jang Jae-hyun presented a creepy story that has everything you need: shamans with inexplicable rituals, Oldboy star Choi Min-sik and creepy scenes.
The plot follows a wealthy clan of Koreans who are faced with a mysterious illness. When the head of the family turns to a shaman for help, he immediately finds a problem: in his grandfather’s grave, located on top of a mountain.

Now the heroes must dig up the chest and, without opening it, set it on fire. However, rumors of a hidden treasure prompt a hospital worker to look inside. And this leads to terrifying consequences.
The film received a high score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 6.6 out of 10 on Kinopoisk.
Critics appreciated the way the creators integrated national rituals, Feng Shui and shamanism into modernity.
“There are few scary moments, everything here is based on the atmosphere, but two hours flew by in one breath,” one of the reviewers shared his impressions.
In Russia, the film was not received as enthusiastically as abroad, but there is an explanation for that. The fact is that it will be difficult for all viewers who are not familiar with dramas to immediately understand the nuances of Korean culture.

Everyone will like it:
- form,
- creative monsters,
- historical references (who doesn’t love the Joseon era?),
- gloomy atmosphere
- appropriate musical accompaniment.
