TV Academy eliminates the pending episode rule starting with the 2023 Emmys

The TV Academy announced today that it will repeal the suspended episode rule with the Emmy Contest 2023.

The suspended episodes rule currently allows a series (including limited series or anthology) to premiere in episodes of the current season after the eligibility deadline of May 31, but before the nominating round begins , publish these episodes on a platform accessible to Academy members. Allow episodes of the current Emmy contest until May 31st.

The hanging rule is abolished from the beginning of the following allowed year (1 June 2022 – 31 May 2023); Only episodes that will be premiered on a platform accessible to the national public will be allowed before May 31st. The academy made changes to the standardization of all applications during the permitted year.

Here are the full admission rules for the series and limited series / anthology starting with the 2023 Emmy contest:

  • The required number of episodes of the series must be premiered by May 31 to enter the current Emmy competition. (Six episodes are required for animation, comedy, drama, diversity, short, and reality series. Documentary series and non-show series require three episodes.)
  • If the series premieres during the current Emmy year but does not have the required number of national premiere episodes to qualify for its category, the series, along with individual achievements, will qualify for the next Emmy competition.
  • If the series qualifies for the current year but has additional episodes after the current season premiere on May 31, those episodes will qualify for an Emmy along with the next season of the series.
  • If the series does not return to the next Emmy competition, these episodes will be allowed as separate “orphaned” episodes in a separate objective category. The presentation of a part of the work (including series and acting categories) in the form of “orphan” episodes will not be allowed.

Limited series / anthology

  • All episodes / portions of the first limited series / anthology must be made nationally by May 31 in order to participate in the current Emmy competition.
  • If not all episodes / episodes premiere this year, the entire limited series, along with individual results, will compete in the next Emmy competition.

This year’s Emmy Awards will air live on September 12, 2022 at the Microsoft Theater and will air on NBC. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held on September 3rd and 4th.
