Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber, 36, for $ 50 million (£ 40 million), arguing that his editorial in the Washington Post on domestic abuse was about him, even though he didn’t name him directly.
TV presenter Piers Morgan, 57, described the outcome of the libel trial of Johnny Depp, 58, and Amber Heard as “a complete disaster” for the actress.
The Virginia jury delivered the unanimous verdict on Wednesday (May 1), with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor receiving $ 10 million (£ 8 million) in compensation and $ 5 million (£ 4 million) in punitive damages.
Aquaman actress Amber, 36, won one of her three libel cases against Depp and received $ 2 million (£ 1.6 million).
Reacting to the result live on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the former editor of the newspaper called the verdict a “total victory for Johnny Depp” and “annihilation for Amber Heard”.
She said, “It’s hard to imagine greater humiliation for Amber Heard. It’s a complete disaster and failure,” adding that she didn’t think she would find a job after the relationship.
Several celebrities commented under Depp’s Instagram post, where he shared his statement on the verdict.
Former footballer Gary Lineker joked: “Depp wins and gets immunity from Heard.”
Actress Ashley Benson commented with a heart and hands up emoji, while singer Ryan Adams added a heart, hands up and fire emoji in response.
The former couple married in 2015 and divorced two years later.
The court case came after Depp sued his ex-wife over a 2018 opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post about her experiences with domestic violence.
She later reacted, demanding damages and claiming that her ex partner defamed her as a liar.
In a statement following the result, Amber said she was “heartbroken” and “the disappointment I feel today is beyond words”.
Depp stated in his own statement: “The jury has given me my life back. I am truly honored.”
The trial began on April 11, and the two actors took to the stage to discuss the details of their relationship. Among those who took the stage were model Kate Moss, Heard’s sister Whitney Henriquez, and employees of Disney and Warner Bros.
