Emmerdale star Andy Devine died after an accidental fall, a medical examiner announced.

The actor, best known for his iconic role on the ITV soap opera, died on January 27 at the age of 79, according to public records.

Andy is believed to have “lost his balance and fallen” and died at Southport Hospital in Merseyside.

Sefton senior coroner Julie Goulding said, “He was unable to get up until his guards arrived to assist him about an hour later.”

“Peter had a significant number of underlying serious clinical comorbidities and, despite all appropriate care and treatment, Peter’s condition worsened until his death.”

The medical cause of his death was determined as “nosocomial pneumonia” and the cause of death was concluded as an “accident”.

He officially left Emmerdale in 2010, with his beloved character killed in a heartwarming July episode that saw him tragically drown in a stream as part of a heartbreaking story of alcohol abuse.

Away from the world of soap operas, Andy has appeared as a guest on projects such as Russell T. Davies’ Queer As Folk.

He also appeared in several episodes of the Doctor Who special Frontier in Space in 1973 and made his last television appearance in 2011 in an episode of Doctors.

In the aftermath of Andy’s death, Liam O’Brien, who played Ethan Blake in Emmerdale for three years, said: “Heartbroken hearing of the death of an old friend. Even sadder that he died in January and not. I was at sea now when he heard the news and Andy Devine was a sailor through and through.

“God rest my friend. Second star on the right. Until the morning.

One fan wrote: “He is saddened to hear that Andy Devine is dead. What an actor (and character). ‘Oooh my cans.’

Another wrote: “I am very sorry to know that Dingle star Andy Devine passed away at the age of 79 earlier this year.”
