Carey Mulligan joins Bradley Cooper in Leonard Bernstein biopic The Maestro

Actress Carey Mulligan was spotted with Bradley Cooper in New York on Tuesday filming scenes from a new Netflix bio about composer Leonard Bernstein.

47-year-old Bradley completely transformed himself for the lead role, using prosthetics and film make-up deftly.

Meanwhile, Carey plays his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre, who is said to be staying with Bernstein despite knowing she is gay.

The two movie stars may have gone unnoticed in the days they were filming, as Bradley became unrecognizable thanks to the transformation and was the spitting image of the Broadway artist who created iconic shows like West Side Story.

In touching scenes, the stars were seen talking while crossing their arms before hugging each other.

At one point, Mulligan saw them light a cigarette as they sat with their backs to each other.

Cooper is directing and starring in the project that Maya Hawke and Matt Bomer will also do.

In another first look at the production photos, Cooper’s face was wrinkled and aged with the help of a team of makeup artists and hairstylists.

He can be seen in photographs wearing a white button and special aviator glasses as he tries to compose some of Broadway’s most famous soundtracks.

Other portrayals of the Master have portrayed Bradley as Bernstein from his youth: He looked very much like the actor the audience already knew and loved.

In retro black-and-white footage, Cooper plays lead actress Carey Mulligan and Bernstein’s wife, Felicia.

The maestro tells the behind-the-scenes story of the Broadway legend and his relationship with Felicia Montealegre, who, despite knowing that he is gay, stayed with him his entire life.

Joining the cast, Maya Hawke will play Leonard and Felicia’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein. Successor Jeremy Strong will star in the film by writer John Gruen, who wrote Bernstein’s biography The Private World of Leonard Bernstein.

Powered by Netflix and co-written/directed by the Hangover star, the film explores the complex relationship between Leonard and Felicia.

Their romance lasted more than 30 years – from their first meeting in 1946 to two casual engagements, a 25-year marriage, and three children with whom Bernstein struggled with his own sexuality.

Cooper will begin producing the film in New York in May alongside Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Fred Berner and Amy Durning.

A music expert, Leonard Bernstein has worked as a composer, pianist and conductor and has been honored with seven Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards and 16 Grammy Awards throughout his career.

He died of a heart attack in 1990, just five days after he quit conducting.

Spielberg was originally supposed to direct the movie and Cooper was supposed to play the lead, but later handed the reins to the actor.
