“We had six days since the director started,” said Tom Hanks. Elvis Production before closing after it arrived with Covid in early 2020.
Hanks was one of the first Hollywood stars to resist and defeat what was then a mysterious virus, as Deadline told you.
“Nobody knew what the hell it was,” said Covid’s Baz Luhrmann. “All I can remember are the guys in HazMat costumes.”
However, the long hiatus for Hanks, who plays Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley’s famous manager in the film, was “a kind of divine providence to refocus and reconsider.”
“And Austin (Butler) still had a few months to work on his movements, vocals and song,” adds the two-time Academy Award winner.
As Luhrmann and Hanks told us in our last studio interview, the former took the opportunity to rework the script when production was halted.
“I think I broke the contract between the colonel and the way he tells it, and that gives us the right to say what the colonel said,” Luhrmann explained.
“We turned the colonel into a man who said ‘no, no, no’, a man who said ‘yes’. “Do you want to free me?” Yes. “Do you like the world around you?” “Yes,” Hanks said.
It was an emotional moment for Luhrmann when his protagonist Butler decided to stay in Australia during the film’s premiere; And don’t go back to the United States.
Butler recalled: “I’m going to lose momentum, I have to stay, it’s my time to get ready smoothly.”
When the cameras returned, Luhrmann called the comedy “the smoothest and most timely shot I’ve ever done.”
Elvis It received the longest standing ovation in all premieres of the Cannes Film Festival this year, ten stellar minutes. The film opens on June 24.
