The Cannes Film Festival has a long and illustrious experience in shedding the spotlight on important works in the history of cinema with its highest honor, the Palme d’Or.
The festival first awarded its highest award in 1939, but the award was not always called the Golden Palm Branch, nor was it always awarded to a single film.
Initially, the award was called “Grand Prix du Festival Internationale du Film”, the term “Golden Palm Branch” with a little less luster.
For decades since the award was established, the skin has moved back and forth between these two denominations. The highest award was awarded to the Golden Palm Branch in 1955 when it was received by Delbert Mann. March Respect yourself. Then, in 1964, it went back to being Grand Prix, until it was finally consecrated as the branch of the Palme d’Or, which has been his name for the past 45 years.
Although the festival’s main prize was first awarded 84 years ago, there aren’t even 84 winners. For several years, such as 2020, the event was canceled and therefore the highest prize was not awarded. The reasons for the festival’s cancellation have varied over the decades, from the pandemic (2020), through the Second World War (1940-1945), through the May 68 movement (1968), to internal budget problems (1948 and 1950). .
In the other years the jury’s votes ended on a par, with more than one film having received the award. In other years, the jury awarded the best cup in various categories such as Disney dambo For the best animated design in 1947. Many of the best prizes were awarded in 1946, 11, more precisely, after the festival died down during the war.
