“You know, I gave it my all,” Jack Black tells Crew Call about preparing for the role of mega-villain Bowser in Illumination/Nintendo/Universal Super Mario Bros. Movie.
“I gained seven pounds just eating Bowser-esque foods, which ironically look like my kind of foods: cheeseburgers, fries, just like De Niro,” says the award-winning singer and stage actor.
“It’s amazing how similar the research for Bowser was to what I had already done, but by God, I did it.”
Today’s conversation with Black focuses on how he and Tenacious D producing partner John Spiker created the power ballad “Peaches,” which earned Bowser $1 in the animated film. 36 billion. Katy Perry had “The One That Got Away,” and well, this is Bowser’s take on it as he moans about the girl who will always run away, Princess Peaches (voiced by Anya Taylor Joy).
“I overcame my fear of mixing my rock and my acting,” Black says of writing the song with directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, film editor Eric Osmond and Spiker.
We talk to Black about forming Tenacious D with Kyle Gass and how, unlike Hall & Oates, they’ve stuck together through thick and thin (“The secret to our success is that we realize the band is greater than the sum of his parts.
