Jodie Comer stars as a new mother struggling to give her newborn the life he deserves in the first moving trailer for The End We Start From.

The 30-year-old actress from Liverpool plays the role of the mother in the film adaptation of Megan Hunter’s novel. She plays a Londoner who is forced to flee the capital when an environmental disaster leads to apocalyptic flooding.

The trailer opens with mom meeting her love interest R at a bar before disaster strikes, and the couple debating whether to go on a date.

Mother jokes, “It could be a disaster,” as the caravan suddenly cuts to a flash forward of her standing in the sea with her baby in her arms after the disaster.

A montage shows how the relationship between mother and O develops, but just as it becomes clear that the couple are expecting their first child together, a climate crisis begins in which houses and buildings become uninhabitable due to rising water.

Just as the mother gives birth to her child, the crisis reaches its peak. All of London has to be evacuated as water levels rise to such an extent that double-decker buses are drowning.

Mother and her baby flee north, but the trailer ends with him defiantly saying, “I’m going home.”

The film’s official synopsis reads: “When an environmental crisis engulfs London, a young family is torn apart in the chaos.”

“As a woman and her newborn struggle to find their way home, the profound newness of motherhood is starkly highlighted in this dystopian depiction of family survival and hope.”

Commenting on her new role, Jodie said: “My character is ordinary and extraordinary, both her personal life and the world around her are turned upside down and she has to deal with the unknown at every turn.”

“Their story is about the quiet heroics of determination, commitment, courage and love.”

Director Mahalia Belo added: “The End We Start From is a unique and original take on a survival film.” One related to the climate crisis we are experiencing now.

“It offers an honest look at the nature of a hero, a person who is compelled to be brave but sometimes can’t.”

“It’s amazing to work with such an extraordinary cast and bring this human, original and ultimately hopeful story to life.”

Jodie and Katherine are joined in the film by Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and Gina McKee.

Ironically, that doesn’t seem to have stopped Jodie leaving the capital to star in the film and she was recently reported to have moved from her family home in Childwall, Liverpool.

A source told the Mirror: “Jodie is incredibly close to her family, but she has decided she wants her own place.” Now she took the plunge and moved.

“She fell in love with a place in Hampstead and is enjoying making it her own.”

Moving to the spacious property in North London, she counts stars such as Harry Styles and Ricky Gervais among her neighbours.

The End We Start From is developed by Benedict Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch, Hera Pictures, Anton and BBC Film. Cumberbatch and Comer are also teaming up to produce the project.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10 and currently has a score of 78 percent on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

The End We Start is released on December 8th in the US and January 19th in the UK.
