Crown fans moved to tears as they watch horrific car crash that killed Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed: ‘The saddest day’

Crown fans were moved to tears as they watched Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed’s final moments.

The Netflix show recreated the fatal Paris car crash that killed the couple in 1997 – until their car went into the Pont de l’Alma tunnel.

The poignant scene comes at the end of the third episode of the royal drama’s sixth and final season, which landed on the streaming service this morning.

Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi (Khalid Abdalla) get into a car outside the Ritz hotel in Paris to return to the Egyptian film producer’s apartment. The car then accelerates through the streets of the French capital before entering the tunnel at high speed.

Viewers wept as they watched the emotional scene, with one writing: “As long as I live I will never forget the day Diana died. The saddest day.’

Another said: “Currently sobbing and screaming over the first part of The Crown.”

A third added: “The first scene of episode 1 of The Crown season 6 is literally Diana’s accident – I can’t do it, I swear I’m crying within the first four minutes of the episode.”

One fan wrote: “The last phone call between Harry, William and Diana broke my heart.”

It comes after Netflix stressed during production of season six that viewers will not see the accident that killed Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed. However, audio of the fatal incident is played in the episode.

The portrayal of events leading up to the accident is likely to cause new concerns for the royal family as they deal with such a sensitive issue.

Before their fateful final journey, Dodi speaks in a corridor and asks Henri Paul, the Ritz’s deputy head of security, if the couple’s journey is safe. Henri explains in French that two employees have brought a decoy vehicle with them so that the air is clear for Diana and Dodi.

“No one will see us go, believe me,” he says to Dodi.

But when the couple go to the Mercedes-Benz W140, they are flanked by paparazzi.

Ominous music then plays as the driver asks Diana if everything is okay, before Dodi Henri – who drives the vehicle – says “Allez”.

After the couple get into the car, only a few words are spoken, but Diana and Dodi hold tight and shake each other’s hands.

The car starts driving through the streets and passes a pedestrian walking his dog – who seems a little surprised at the speed of the vehicle.

Netflix has always insisted that viewers will not see the Pont de l’Alma tunnel accident that killed Dodi and Henri Paul and took the life of Diana a few hours later. However, the crash can already be heard at the end of episode three.

The sequence even goes so far as to show the car entering the Pont de l’Alma tunnel as it speeds past the dog’s handler – a clip that may shock some viewers.

The final series also shows the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death as the royal family learns the news at Balmoral.

In a moving scene, an aide delivers the news to the Queen (Imelda Staunton), Prince Philip (Jonathan Pryce) and Prince Charles (Dominic West), who are gathered around the television watching coverage of the crash.

No words are heard as the assistant delivers the news, but Charles, visibly devastated, breaks down in tears on the couch.

Although the queen is stoic, you can still hold back tears with a serious expression on her face.

Elsewhere in the opening episodes of the final season, Princess Diana is depicted as anxious and frustrated on the last day of her life, as she spends the day with Dodi in Pris. In one scene, she expresses her frustration when she tries to call her sons in Balmoral and is told that she “missed” them.

The clip opens with Diana stepping out of a car in the Ritz Hotel with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed by her side. She is overwhelmed by paparazzi.

She then enters the hotel, where she calls Balmoral to speak to William and Harry.

“Balmoral Castle,” said the operator.

“Oh, it’s Diana calling the boys,” replied the princess.

“You just missed it,” adds the assistant. “The princes waited for your call, but went back outside. “Maybe you’ll try again at dinner.”

Diana then looks extremely pained, silently says “f**k” and contorts her face in anger. However, she is allowed to talk to the boys later.

Other clips released recently include Charles’ despair when he tells William and Harry that their mother is dead, and Diana telling Dodi that she is “persona non grata” at Balmoral.

The program will also show when Prince William and Prince Harry last spoke to their mother, but it will not be an actual reflection of the conversation.

Princess Diana’s former butler claims the sixth season of Netflix series The Crown “went too far” by recreating the last months of the late royal’s life.

Paul Burrell, 65, served as a valet to the late Queen before working as Diana’s butler for a decade until she died in Paris in 1997.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said the current series was too close to recent history and had opened old wounds among Diana’s close friends and family, including Prince William, 41, and Prince Harry, 39.

“It still feels macabre to show the vehicle she died in, it’s just going too far,” said Paul. “I find the whole scene of Diana’s death depicted in a fictional television show grotesque.”

Paul – who famously claimed he was Diana’s “rock” after her bitter divorce from King Charles in 1996 – urged viewers to watch The Crown with caution.

Paul, who believes the series has “gone too far”, urged viewers to protect the late princess’s legacy rather than focus on her final moments.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine Show this morning, Burrell expressed his concerns about the show and admitted he could not watch the “graphic” series.

He said, “I can’t look at it.” [series six of The Crown] it’s too graphic and too much. This is going to upset a lot of people. I find this series very difficult. I don’t know if I can watch it.’

Paul added: “I can watch the first few series because it’s so long, but it’s too early now.

“I will be critical. I think the princess was misunderstood. The Diana I knew was a fighter and she fought for her sons.”

But it wasn’t just Princess Diana who Paul said was misrepresented on the show.

“I knew the queen very well and I know she doesn’t want to be portrayed like that,” he said.

“She was a warm, loving grandmother and the beating heart of our nation. I think there is a misrepresentation.”
