“Barbie” is set for the Gotham Awards’ first-ever tribute to global icons and creators

The likely pink awards season continues.

The Gotham Awards will honor the highest-grossing film of 2023, Greta Gerwig Barbie, with his first Global Icon & Creator Tribute. The award will be presented on November 27 at the 33rd annual Gotham Awards ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The Icon & Creator Tribute was created to honor cultural icons and the filmmakers responsible for bringing that icon’s story to life. Gerwig has been a part of the Gotham community since her nomination as a Breakthrough Actor in 2010 for her performance in Gotham Grönberg. Her 2017 film received nominations for Breakthrough Director and Best Screenplay. Lady Birdwhich was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.

“Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the inventive world of Barbie and its razor-sharp original screenplay, dynamic cinematography, emotional and hilarious performances, vibrant set and costume designs and exciting original music,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute. “The Barbie The creative team took Mattel’s beloved icon and turned it into a cinematic masterpiece. We are thrilled to honor this extraordinary film, the creatives who brought it to the screen, and their unique take on the iconic doll at the center of it all.”

Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film was a worldwide hit, grossing $1.44 billion worldwide and $636.1 million domestically. Statistically, it is the highest-grossing film of 2023, 14th and 11th of all time, respectively.

America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Simu Liu star in the picture from screenwriters Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.
