Association of snow tells the story of the rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes in 1972; The incident was made famous by the 1993 book and film Compassion. But during Compassion JA Bayona’s Venice Film Festival closing film focuses on the survivors who had to eat the dead crash victims to survive, and focuses on those who didn’t.
“It’s really about a more internal conversation with the people who couldn’t be there, who aren’t here to tell their stories,” Giacchino said after a performance of the Netflix film’s soundtrack at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film Awards season event .
The score features a vocal chorus of Mapuche singers. Mapuche is an indigenous language of the Andes.
“For me, it was the voice of the people who didn’t come back,” Giacchino said. “It’s really about Mother Earth and nature and all the things that surrounded her at the time.”
Giacchino scored Pixar films, e.g Ratatouille And Onand live action films such as Star Trek and this jurassic world Trilogy. The composer said he felt the gravity of writing music for a true story.
“I always say it doesn’t matter if it’s a rat cooking in the kitchen or if it’s Captain Kirk from the Enterprise, to me they’re all real people,” Giacchino said. “They were real people in this movie.”
Giacchino met two survivors of the accident. He was particularly impressed by how Gustavo Zerbino was able to maintain his sense of humor about the ordeal after all these years, especially when others expressed their fear of flying.
“Gustavo says: ‘What are you talking about? “Nothing ever goes wrong on airplanes,” Giacchino said.
Despite the joke, Giacchino said, “You can see they’re carrying the burden of their friends who didn’t make it.”
Giacchino converted the score Association of snow is dark, but “it’s not always full of sadness and pity. It was about: How am I going to survive?”
The composer’s career began in the 1990s developing video games for DreamWorks. Steven Spielberg himself heard of Giacchino’s works and commissioned a full orchestra to record them. Giacchino credits Spielberg with launching his career.
“If he hadn’t said we should do it with a live band, they would never have paid for a live band for a video game,” Giacchino said.
Check back Monday to see the panel video for the film coming to Netflix on January 4th.
