In May, Justine Triet became only the third woman to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The award was given for her critically acclaimed courtroom drama anatomy of a fall, which was picked up by Neon and is now being released domestically. The film is also being pushed hard for the Oscars, although, to the surprise of many, it was not selected by the committee responsible for selecting France’s official entry for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.The taste of things received this honor). Nevertheless, Triet’s convincing film competes for nominations for best film, best director, best screenplay and best actress for Sandra Hülser. Chances are, Triet will be in the debut of the Oscar season edition of my Deadline video series, Behind the Lens, this week.
Triet certainly knows how to make films with awards potential. Her previous films, 2013 Age of panic and that from 2019 SibylBoth played Cannes and their film In bed with Victoria received two Cesar Award nominations. The director began producing short documentaries and has always been fascinated by true crime stories, an interest that led him to embark on thrilling adventures. Anatomy of a fall. We talk about how it all came about, how Hülser landed the lead role, how he worked with co-writer Arthur Harari (also her partner), and what feminist themes bubble beneath the surface of the story – in some ways, every wife can go here.
