In addition to his cameo appearance on Friends, John was known for his role as “The Sailor” in Old Spice commercials in the 70s and 80s.
Matthew spoke openly about his relationship with his father in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing, which was published last year. In it, he shared that his father left him after divorcing his mother when Matthew was still a child.
Mathew was born in Massachusetts and raised by his mother, Suzanne Marie, in Canada since his parents divorced when he was one year old.
He said, “I was one.” Yes. So I haven’t put all the blame on myself. But …’ in a 2004 interview with NBC.
Their long-distance relationship led to Matthew seeing his father mostly on TV, as he revealed, “That was mostly how I saw my dad when I was young…”
“On TV shows, and you know, getting shot through a door at Mannix or something. That’s my dad.” He said he still admires his father.
People magazine once called Matthew and John “the sexiest father and son” during a photo shoot in which they participated. Perry said: “It was one of the best moments I have ever experienced.
“Just because I can come to this photo shoot with my dad.” And he and I really enjoy hanging out.”

John later joined Perry’s mother Suzanne and stepfather Keith Morrison, who looked somber when they arrived home on Saturday night.
Suzanne was a Canadian journalist and served as press secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada.
In 1981, years after divorcing Matthew’s father John, she married Keith Morrison, a well-known journalist and correspondent for Dateline NBC.
Morrison said in a 2017 interview with Andy Cohen that he thought Matthew would become famous, but “probably not as an actor.”
“He’s a really good guy,” Morrison said.
In an interview with People in 2020, Morrison spoke about his relationship with his stepson Matthew, saying it was “remarkable”.
“He is an intense, talented and focused character. “It is very clear. It was always like that when I was growing up,” Morrison said. “We love having him around.”
The father of six took Matthew to hockey games in Ottawa on Saturday morning.
“He was the one who scored all the goals.” He was the man. The same goes for the tennis court. “He was very good on the tennis court and very intense.”
When Matthew endured a grueling three-month bed rest after gastrointestinal surgery, Morrison was by his side.
“We were able to be with him a lot during that time, which I think was beneficial for everyone,” Morrison said. “It brought the whole family closer together and we all had to be there to support him. He will get through it.’

Matthew starred as Chandler Bing in “Friends” from 1995 to 2004 alongside David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Matt le Blanc (left-right).
In his book, the Friends star revealed the climax of his horrific battle with drug and alcohol addiction that almost cost him his life. He revealed that his colon ruptured at the age of 49 due to his opioid addiction.
Doctors gave him only a two percent chance of survival and he was in a coma for two weeks, followed by another month in hospital.
Perry required fourteen surgeries to repair all abdominal damage, and he admitted to going to rehab fifteen times over the years in hopes of kicking his drug addiction.
At one point during his Friends career, he admitted that he was taking 55 Vicodin a day and had only lost 128 pounds, but he still “didn’t know how to stop.”
He even revealed that he would go to the open houses – not because he was interested in buying real estate, but to see if he could steal medicine from medicine cabinets.
