EXCLUSIVE: Harvardwood announced Madi Stine, Anthony Zonfrelli and Warner James Wood as the winners of its 17th Writers Competition on Wednesday, also naming Wood as its top television writer for 2023. As Harvard University’s official alumni organization for Arts, Media and Entertainment, Harvardwood aims to support talented aspiring writers of all backgrounds by connecting them with mentors, producers and representatives. Harvardwood’s author program has nearly doubled in size since the pandemic began, expanding its global participation, with winners selected by a panel of industry experts.
This year’s trio is now joined by writers and producers Neal Baer (HE, Designated survivor), Emily Halpern (80 for Brady, smart book) and Jeff Schaffer (David, Control your enthusiasm). They are also read by top producers and can be represented at established agencies and management companies and receive a cash prize.
“Harvardwood is grateful to our industry mentors and judges for their efforts to identify and develop exciting new voices in film and television,” said Mia Riverton Alpert, founder of Harvardwood. “We are excited about the strong material and talent that continues to emerge from our writing programs.”
In recent years, participants in the Harvardwood Writers Program and Competition have had successful test sales to ABC, The CW, Disney+, The Jim Henson Company, Netflix, Showtime, Sony, Syfy and TV Land, in addition to blind script deals at ABC Studios and Warner Bros. They have also been used on more than two dozen shows, including Almost paradise (WGN), american father (Fox), animations (Hulu), Awkwafina is Nora from Queens (Comedy Central) billion (Show time), Bridgeton (netflix), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (The CW), Look (ABC), family man (Fox), Fear the walking death (AMC), The Lightning (The CW), future person (Hulu), The Goldbergs (ABC), Gotham (Fox), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), The story of the maid (Hulu), home country (Show time), How to get away with murder (ABC), In the dark (CW) Jane the girl (The CW), Manhunt: Deadly Games (CBS), manifest (netflix), Marvel’s runaways (Hulu), Current (Stars), Queen Sugar (OWN), the resident (Fox), shadow hunters (free form), star girl (The CW), The Simpsons (Fox), Time tab. Participating screenwriters have successfully written for Circle of Confusion, Electric Entertainment, Lionsgate, Marvel Films and Netflix. Notable companies that have signed Harvardwood writers include 3 Arts, Apostle, Benderspink, Brant Rose Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA, Circle of Confusion, Echo Lake, Gersh, ICM, Madhouse Entertainment, Management 360, Mosaic, Original Artists, UTA and WME to name a few.
