Martin Roberts explained that “his heart would have suffocated” had he not been taken to the emergency room after a terrible health scare had left him moments after death.
The 58-year-old host of The Homes Under The Hammer was hospitalized last month with a prolonged chest pain of Covid-19 but found that he suffers from a pericardial effusion, a buildup of fluid in the structure around his heart.
Martin admitted Wednesday that the dramatic health crisis has caused him to “reset” his busy schedule, but he hopes to be able to shoot again in the coming weeks.

Talking about his health concern, Martin told Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes that he had been having chest pains for a few weeks but had long thought it was Covid.
He said: ‘I’ve been feeling a little bad under the weather for a few weeks. I’ve had several respiratory infections over the years and have had asthma since childhood, so I’m used to a pretty tight chest.
“As Easter weekend approached, it started to get so bad that I could barely walk without breathing.”

“The confusing thing about this is that some kind of red herring puts you on the respiratory side of things, so you don’t think it has anything to do with your heart.

Symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, discomfort when breathing, feeling light-headed, or swelling in the abdomen or legs.
Although the condition can be treated with medication, in severe cases, doctors may perform surgery to drain excess fluid.
Martin explained that he needed surgery because the fluid buildup was straining his heart, causing organ failure.
He told Phillip and Rochelle: “You have a sac around your heart and it’s filled with fluid, it’s called a pericardial effusion, and there’s something called a tapenade, which basically means that this sac is filling the heart.” therefore the heart cannot expand and therefore cannot pump, which means that all your organs are starting to fail.
“When they got to me, my kidneys were 30 percent, my liver was 30 percent, my lungs were not getting oxygen, and I could have had a heart attack at any moment… The heart would have suffocated on its own.”
He added: “We are talking about the striking moments of life”.
When asked what was on his mind, Martin replied, “You put your life in the hands of the professionals. I sleep in the specialist cardiac drainage unit – there is a special operating room and there is local anesthesia.

“Some good news, some bad news. I went to the hospital in Bath yesterday.
