The woman gave the world a great actor.
Leonardo DiCaprio has repeatedly emphasized that he has Russian roots: on his mother’s side, Russian blood came to him from his grandmother. Her name is Elena Stepanovna Smirnova. She was born and spent the first years of her life in pre-revolutionary Russia.
As they said in the Anatomy of the Day program, Elena’s parents emigrated to Germany after the revolution, where the girl grew up. Here her name was changed to German and she began to be called Helen. From her marriage to the German Wilhelm Indenbirken she had a daughter, Irmelin. Years later she married George DiCaprio, moved to Los Angeles and Leo was born there.

As a child, the actor often spent time with his grandmother, she actually raised him. Elena passed away in 2008 at a respectable age of 93. Leonardo later said that it was the grandmother who made him a successful person and instilled in her the qualities that she herself possessed: honesty, determination in achieving goals and integrity of nature.
