Carol Vorderman shared a photo with her older brother Anton, who was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, to attract attention.

In addition to laughing, the 61-year-old television broadcaster announced that his 70-year-old brother had undergone 24 surgeries in his life and also received speech therapy.

Carol described how Anton was born with the “severe form” of his left lip and palate, and how he paid for the treatment of his mother, who is a single parent.

The old countdown wizard wrote: “This week is HALF AWARENESS WEEK. Together with my brother Anton this week doing our STEP UP FOR CLAPA FOR CLAPA (Association for Cleft Lip and Palate) to raise awareness of cleft lip and cleft palate.

‘Anton was born with the most severe form of cleft lip and cleft palate and underwent 24 surgeries throughout his life.

Clefts are very diverse and may require many years of specialized care and surgery, including speech therapy.

When Anton was 7 years old, our mother raised us as a single parent, our father did not give him a penny for years.

“So he had up to 5 part-time jobs to put food on the table, and one of the things he saved money on was Anton’s speech therapy classes in the 1960s. It changed his life. Now this is on trial on the NHS.

Anton is 7 years older than me. He was born with a cleft lip and severe cleft palate, and we grew up in a small flat in Prestatyn, North Wales.

She said of her childhood: “Our parents were separated and our father wasn’t around, so Anton was like my ‘dad’.

Cleft lip and cleft palate

What does cleft lip and palate look like:

  • Babies can be born with a cleft lip, cleft palate, or both.
