Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary kicks into high gear with April’s full TCM film schedule dedicated to the studio

Turner Classic Movies is dedicating the entire month of April to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of its publisher Warner Bros. featuring hundreds of films from every decade from the studio, as well as a variety of interstitials, documentaries, shorts and Looney Tunes animation. as interviews with stars and directors focusing on the film achievements of the legendary film factory.

Viewers got a taste of the commemorative activities at this year’s Oscar show with a tribute to highlights from WB’s first 100 years. But that role revolved almost as much around the studio’s in-house production as it did about some of the classics it acquired through various deals with MGM, New Line Cinema and others. This is how Oscar viewers saw such MGM films The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain, Ben-Hur And 2001: a space odyssey, along with NL giants such as The lord of the rings And Austin Powers Franchises stirred in the same pot as Strictly speaking Warner’s “product” as Superman, Batman, Casablanca, rebel without reason, unforgiven and other famous titles created by the legendary Burbank studio itself. While certainly sophisticated, impressive and exciting, the short tribute drew criticism for including films that the studio didn’t actually own near.

Going through April’s entire 24/7 program dedicated to the first 100 years of WB, TCM (a very smart and valuable cable channel that actually originated when Ted Turner bought much of the MGM classic library for his favorite bought Blown by the wind among other assets) has built up what I would call a clean and diverse collection sincerely Warner film achievements possible, even if it is really only a drop in the bucket of those 100 years.

Additionally, in April, TCM will screen restorations and remasters of 10 iconic Warner Bros. films with introductions from some of the world’s leading filmmakers and film experts as part of the network’s multi-year partnership with The Film Foundation, which is dedicated to funding education and restore classic films. The specific titles that will be shown on TCM are as follows, with some of these films also available to stream on the Classics Curated by TCM hub on sister streamer HBO Max:

• east of Eden (1955) – a 4k restoration introduced by filmmakers Wes Anderson and Joanna Hogg
• Rio Bravo (1959) – a 4k restoration introduced by filmmaker Martin Scorsese (and as previously reported by Deadline, which had its world premiere on opening night of the TCM Classic Film Festival on April 13)
• land of the pharaohs (1955) – A Blu-ray HD remaster introduced by Martin Scorsese
• A lion is in the streets (1953) – A Blu-ray HD remaster introduced by Daphne Dentz and Robyn

“Warner Bros.” History is TCM history,” says Pola Changnon, TCM Managing Director, “what would this network be without films like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon or A star is born? We are excited to honor the studio that has brought us so many iconic films since 1923. In addition to this huge selection of films, we are programming a host of trailers, archival interviews and more that will further highlight the studio’s legacy. which you won’t find anywhere else but on TCM.”

Organized thematically throughout the month, the program showcases the studio’s breadth of films from classic to contemporary, with categories such as Warner Joins a Gang, Warner Goes to School, Warner Raise a Family, Warner turns to crime”. “and more. TCM premieres include documentaries such as Jack L Warner (1993), TCM Originals as Jets in Love: The Origins of Chain Lightning and iconic films such as full metal jacket (1987), along with Academy Award winners for Best Picture million dollar baby (2004) and argon (2012).

Other than the tribute spot shown at the Academy Awards, the only one notThe Warners-produced film I saw on a busy schedule is a screening of the 1956 Oscar-winning Best Picture In 80 days around the world, credited to Todd-United Artists upon release, but entered the Warners library in 1983 through an acquisition from the late producer Michael Todd’s widow, Elizabeth Taylor. Although the studio released a restored DVD version in 2004, it remains one of the few Best Picture winners still not on Blu-ray. It would be nice to at least see this all-star spectacle on video given the 4K restoration treatment.

According to TCM, fans can engage with the network in a variety of ways, including a mailing list of shows, social posts featuring rare photos from the Warner Bros. archives, and more than a dozen articles on TCM.com highlighting the importance of the programs. Highlight and a Film 101 YouTube video on the history of the gangster film at Warner Bros.

The network also announces a further expansion of TCM’s WB100 celebration, upcoming auctions through TCM’s partnership with Julien’s, including April’s “Hollywood: Classic & Contemporary” auction. It will feature hundreds of pieces of Hollywood history, including items from private WB film collections such as seven props from the Harry Potter Franchise, a production used shutter of superman (1978), WB’s original title panel my beautiful lady (1964), Christian Bale’s Hood Batman begins (2005) and a screenplay by Darryl Zanuck The jazz singer (1927). Another auction focusing on “Hollywood Legends” will also take place in August.

In addition, in May the release of Warner Bros.: 100 Years of Storytelling, a book spanning the studio’s centennial history, written by Mark Vieira. It is published by Running Press in association with TCM and Warner Bros.
