The global gossip gets its first full-length recording from Chris Rock, who will finally open up about the infamous Oscar incident with Will Smith.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage will stream live on Netflix from Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theater on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
While the media talked ad nauseam about the Oscar attack and Will Smith tried to explain himself in various ways, Rock largely kept his opinions to himself. He shared brief jokes during his performances but did not elaborate on the moment.
Reportedly set to host the Oscars and appear in a Super Bowl ad with Smith, he said he’s keeping his thoughts on what happened in a big reveal.
So far, he’s edited a few bits that may or may not appear in the special.
He gave one of his longest recordings at an arena show held in January in Charleston, South Carolina, on a bill with Dave Chappelle.
“What people want to know… did it hurt? Damn that hurt. He played Muhammad Ali! I played Pookie (in ‘New Jack City’). I’m also a zebra in animated films, he loves sharks. I was hit so hard I could hear ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears,” Rock joked, a source told The Wall Street Journal.
On the same show, Rock also talked about the height difference between himself and Smith.
“Will Smith is a big guy. I’m not,” Rock said. “Will Smith does not wear a shirt in his films. If you see me in a movie having open-heart surgery, I’ll be wearing a sweater.”
Rock tried another joke on another show, the New York Post reported.
“I’ve had a crush on Will Smith all my life,” he recently told the audience at a theater performance. But Rock said he hated seeing Smith’s latest film.
“I was watching ‘Emancipation’ the other day so I could see him get beaten.”
According to a report by Deadline, Rock previously joked with Dave Chappelle at London’s O2 Arena about their height difference: “He played Ali! I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather.” Ali was a heavyweight, Mayweather a light middleweight.
Rock is also credited as Smith “Suge Smith,” a nod to giant rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight.
Smith’s attempts to contact him were rebuffed by Rock. “I reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and if he is he’ll be in touch,” Smith said in a video widely shared on social media.
At the O2 Arena, Rock responded. “Fuck your hostage video,” he said.
