Son Lux’s Ryan Lott on How Daniels Scored Pop Band ‘Free Reign’ for Everything Everywhere All At Once – Crew Call Podcast

Son Lux is the first group ever to be nominated for Best Original Score at the Oscars Everything, everywhere, all at onceand this year they are the only composers to use nouns in the original score and the song, the latter for their collaboration with Mitski and Oscar winner/former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne on “This is a Life,” the A24’s end track Movie .

The only other group ever to be nominated for the Oscars was the Beatles, but never in the original score, rather in the defunct category of original song score for their film Let it be.

As lead band member Son Lux tells us here at Crew Call, the band, which also includes Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang, were the first additions to the Daniels film, and the filmmakers are big fans of the band’s work.

DGA award winners Daniel Kwan and Daniels Scheinert contacted Son Lux in September 2019, the composers finally succeeded on two important parts of the film. The only difference, Lott says, was that the first cut “had spaghetti baby and pasta boy who didn’t make the movie.”

The result here for the wacky family fantasy martial arts film is a smooth, loud, uplifting, emotional classic score.

“They understand the potential of our collaboration better than they did at the beginning,” admits Lott.

“Each of us is a multiverse,” Lott says of the band’s melancholic, cerebral and serious tone, which lends itself perfectly to it. Everything, everywhere, all at once.

“They heard it in our music,” says Lott.

Son Lux was the first collaborator to work with the Daniels on what became the highest grossing A24 film of all time at $104.6 million WW; even before any cast came on board.

“Most of the time the music follows the track,” says Lott, “and it was the other way around.”

Everything, everywhere, all at once won top honors at the PGA, DGA and SAG Awards and is in the running for 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
