After two years of virtual pandemic spending, the Berlin Film Festival returns tonight with a very personal red carpet. Scroll down for photos.
This year’s opening film is Rebecca Miller’s latest she came to mewith Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James and Anne Hathaway.
Billed as an exploration of “love in all its forms,” the film is set in New York City and centers on composer Steven Lauddem (Dinklage) who finds himself creatively blocked and unable to compose the score for his grand to complete to compose a comeback opera. . At the behest of his wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway), his former therapist, he begins a search for inspiration. What he discovers, the synopsis says, is much more than he expected or imagined.
The film will be screened out of competition as a Berlinale Special Gala in the Berlinale Palast.
The 2023 program also includes new films by Christian Petzold and Margarethe von Trotta, and Sean Penn debuts his latest documentary super powerabout his time in Ukraine at the beginning of the Russian invasion.
The jury of this year’s festival will be led by actress Kristen Stewart. She is joined by Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani, German director Valeska Grisebach, Romanian director Radu Jude, American cast and producer Francine Maisler, Spanish director Carla Simón and legendary Hong Kong director and producer Johnnie To.
