Audiences found the “crater scene” in All Quiet On The Western Front disturbing – and director Ed Berger reveals it brought some of the crew to tears too.
Berger said his British cameraman cried during the four days it took to film the scene where Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer) meets a wounded French soldier during World War I trench warfare.
“I started hearing a noise,” Berger said. “Finally I realized that Danny, my cameraman, was crying.
“He was raised by his grandfather, who grew up during the Second World War and hated the Germans.
“But when Danny saw that, he kind of realized that we’re all the same.”
