Coronation Street SPOILER: Carla fears Roy has become addicted to smartphones – will he lose a bet with his cousin Nina?

Roy Cropper will worry his loved ones when he becomes addicted to his phone in Coronation Street next week.

The cafe owner hesitated for years to adapt to modern technology, but earlier this year, after a nasty scare with his cousin Nina, finally gave in and bought a phone.

But in the next few scenes, Roy begins to worry his good friend Carla Connor when he becomes too dependent on his phone to leave it at work, leading Nina to make a bet with him: will he give in?

Nina (Mollie Gallagher) first gave Roy (David Nielson) his cell phone for Christmas, but he was reluctant to accept it, admitting he was a man stuck in the analog era.

But after Nina was injured in the woods and trying to find Roy when he disappeared, he began to realize that phones could be useful, but only in emergencies.

Slowly, Roy began to embrace his phone, first through texts he started with “Dear Nina,” and later accidentally using an eggplant emoji without realizing its sweet meaning.

Over the past few weeks, Roy has realized that with a mobile phone he has a world of information at his fingertips, especially updates on the Roman Castle excavations that interest him.

Roy’s obsession with the fortress and his phone begins to bother Carla (Alison King) as he struggles to finish his shift at the coffee shop without picking it up.

This is not the first time that Roy’s discovery of new wonders has taken over his life, as in 2019 he became addicted to online Scrabble.

Roy’s trust in his phone also catches Nina’s attention, and she challenges him – put his phone away and finish his shift without it.

Will Roy give in?

It comes after it was revealed Corrie was hit by Ofcom complaints over violent scenes aired last Wednesday in which Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) was stabbed and nearly killed.

The dark episode of the ITV soap was part of a poignant story about racism.

Viewers were mesmerized by the show’s ongoing chilling extremism plot, which included an attempt to kill Maria Connor, played by Samia Longchambon.

The episode led to a total of 72 Ofcom complaints about the violence.

The scene took place while Maria was speaking at an event organized to highlight the Weatherfield Refugee Centre.

While Maria was greeting the refugees, Max Turner sat on his phone listening to a character named Blake give a racist speech and vow to end the refugee center by any means necessary.

A far-right gang recently groomed the teenager, isolating him from loved ones and pressuring him to help spread Griff’s racist agenda.

Blake was also manipulated and tricked into killing Councilor Maria.

Walking through the crowd at the restaurant, Black revealed that he was carrying a knife and Alya stepped in front of Maria when he tried to hurt her.

Alya was stabbed and badly injured in the fight before Gary Windass, played by Mikey North, tackled Blake to the ground.

It was too late for Alya though as she fell and clutched her chest where her wound was bleeding.

Blake was arrested by the police and blamed Max for the attack.

Viewers were unmoved by the “bloody violent scenes” and took to Twitter to complain about the dark episode.

MailOnline has reached out to a Coronation Street spokesperson for comment.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
