Editor’s note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the screenplays of films that will appear in this year’s film awards race.
Matt Reeves is the fourth filmmaker to introduce a new version of Batman. Tim Burton’s 1989 version spawned three sequels and three different Batman/Bruce Waynes in the same series. Christopher Nolan introduced a realistic view Batman begins with Christian Bale, and Zack Snyder brought Ben Affleck as the grizzled veteran Batman. (Of course, there was also a 1966 film based on Adam West’s TV show featuring the cast of that show.)
The dough originally started as a spin-off for Affleck, which he may have directed. When Affleck refused, Reeves started all over again. He and co-writer Peter Craig decided to stay The dough separate from Warner Bros’ recently established DC Extended Universe or future plans, and focuses on Wayne (Robert Pattinson) as the detective.
Wayne patrols the streets of Gotham City in his second year. He teams up with Lieutenant Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), but the other agents don’t trust him. The Riddler (Paul Dano) leaves messages for The Batman about his goals, and Batman’s investigation leads him to question gangsters The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) while Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) goes out together.
through research, The dough explores both sides of Bruce Wayne, the eccentric billionaire and masked vigilante. His butler Alfred (Andy Serkis) helps Wayne maintain his dual identity. The film also explores the boundaries he will and will not cross when working with Selina. The dough ends with Wayne realizing the value of Batman, who overcomes the fear in the hearts of criminals. The ending also reveals another familiar Gotham City villain waiting in Arkham Asylum.
Production in London was halted by Covid restrictions, but was able to resume after industry guilds developed safety protocols for productions. An HBO Max spinoff focusing on Farrell’s The Penguin is also in the works.
Although the film is three hours long, Reeves and Craig’s script stretches to a whopping 129 pages. Read it below.
