Are you taking care of your skin, but not getting the desired result? You may be doing something wrong without realizing it… The pharmacist Belén Acero, owner of Pharmacy Avenida de América and specialist in dermocosmetics and nutrition, tells us about the most common mistakes we make when taking care of our skin. Take note!
1. Choosing a product that is not suitable for your skin type
Not all cosmetics work on all skin types. Knowing our skin and its needs is essential to choose the right products.
2. Lack of Consistency
Lack of time, carelessness or laziness are the main causes of lack of consistency in facial routines. It’s not about adding products, it’s about choosing less and those that are more effective on our skin type to see long-term results. You have to be patient, your skin will thank you.
3. Want to use all kinds of assets and mix those that are prohibited
If anything is prohibited in cosmetics, it is mixing certain active ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C or AHAs and BHAs. While retinol, glycolic acid or niacinamide are great active ingredients for the skin, yours may not need them. Personalized routines are the most effective. Use only what your skin needs.
4. Skip or don’t do facial cleansing properly
Any self-respecting beauty routine starts with good facial hygiene. In fact, it’s the most important step. The face should be cleaned daily, morning and evening, with suitable products and preferably only with a towel.
5. Not Hydrating Enough
This happens very often. Oily or combination skin and acne-prone skin believe that their skin, with excessive sebum production, does not need as much hydration. This is a mistake because we will achieve the exact opposite effect. The skin needs more hydration and will produce more to make up for this lack of water. The key is to choose the right moisturizer for each skin type.
6. Apply an excessive amount of product and saturate the skin
More commonly known as cosmetic transfer, the effectiveness and benefits of cosmetics do not increase when we apply more quantity. On the contrary, we can saturate the skin and cosmetic acne appears.
7. Abusing or Not Doing Exfoliants (Too Much or Too Little Is Always Bad)
Extremes are never good. Exfoliating once or twice a week, depending on your skin type, marks a before and after in overall skin health. The pores remain clean, in addition to promoting cell renewal.
8. Don’t use broad spectrum sunscreen all year round
We must use sun protection on a daily basis no matter what season we are in. In fact, sunscreen is the most powerful weapon against premature aging, pimple prevention and skin health. Remember to use a cream that also protects against blue light from screens.
9. Failure to follow the correct order of the products
In cosmetics, the order of the factors changes the result. The products must be applied in the correct order. What’s the point of applying a moisturizer if you haven’t already cleansed your skin? If you’re doing a double cleanse, get the oily cleanser first, then the watery one. Next up is the toner (if you’re using it), the eye contour, the serum, the moisturizer, the sunscreen, and the makeup.
10. Forget the neck and neckline
These areas are the most neglected, meaning they can age faster than the face because the skin is more fragile and thinner. The neck usually suffers from wrinkles and sagging and the neckline mainly suffers from sun spots.
