The toner has been the big forgotten in the facial care routine on many occasions. Anyway, “It’s a step in our beauty ritual that has a lot to do with the health of our skin,” explains makeup artist Cristina Lobato.
The toner is applied twice a day, with a cotton pad and with gentle touches, without dragging, always after cleansing the face and before applying the serum and moisturizer. With a second cotton disc we can tow a little more.
This product is essential in the routine as it balances, refreshes, hydrates, cleanses the pores and prepares the skin for the next treatment.
Why is the toner essential in the facial care routine?
1. Balance the skin.
What happens to our skin after a shower and after cleansing the face? “The pH of the skin becomes unbalanced and as a result it loses water and the formation of the necessary lipids stops. The function of the acid mantle barrier is impaired and we are exposed to minor infections, redness, etc. After the cleansing step, it can take between 2 and 8 hours for the skin to naturally restructure or rebalance, hence the great importance of using a toner to instantly rebalance the skin and prevent it from weakening from day to day,” explains the makeup artist out.
2. Removes traces of impurities.
The tonic helps to remove traces of impurities and dirt, in addition to removing the residue left by the cleaning product we used before.
3. Treat the skin according to its needs.
There is a toner for every type of skin, be it dry, sensitive, oily, combination, normal, etc.
– If your skin is oily, choose tonics that contain glycolic acid. These help to remove dead cells and clean the pore a little deeper.
– For sensitive skin, opt for alcohol-free toners with soothing and anti-inflammatory effects such as Niacinamide.
– If your skin is dry, opt for moisturizing toners that contain hyaluronic acid or sweet almond extract.
4. Visually improves the appearance of the skin.
Toners leave the pore so clean of impurities and detergent residue that, to the human eye, the perception of its size diminishes, but the pores do not close. The cleaner the pore, the less it looks. “If the skin is not clean, the sebum that the skin produces oxidizes and darkens the pore and it is much more appreciated that the pore is dilated,” explains Lobato.
5. It enhances the effect of the rest of the products.
The toner facilitates the absorption of the active ingredients of the rest of the products that follow the facial routine: serum and moisturizer.
