These are the best ‘eco-friendly’ sunscreens that don’t pollute

Did you know that about 25,000 tons of sunscreen ‘residue’ is left behind at the bottom of the oceans every year? In the past 30 years -coinciding with the awareness of sun protection and the associated increase in its use among the population – 1 in 3 coral reefs on the planet have been destroyed and it is estimated that by the year 2040 there will be none. there’s still so much left here – between 70% and 90% of the world’s reefs will be gone.

The truth is that some common sunscreens contain ingredients that are highly polluting to these ecosystems, such as Oxybenzone (which causes severe morphological distortions in coral reefs, damages their DNA and causes it to become encapsulated in its own skeleton and eventually die) or zinc oxide nanoparticles and titanium dioxide, which can be taken up by marine organisms and harm them as well as reef growth. UV filters are also increasingly being found at various levels in the food chain, which, like microplastics, can eventually even end up in our bloodstream…

Fortunately, in this context, it is increasingly common to hear about alternative proposals, ‘eco-friendly’, that do not pollute and that respect the environment.
