7 hit cosmetics from the USSR that are still popular today

A frame from the movie “Office Romance”

One could only imagine cosmetic stores in the Soviet Union where you could find dozens of mascara options and thousands of shades of blush and lipstick. And despite the fact that all this has long become our reality, many still feel only warm feelings towards cosmetics from the USSR. Moreover, you can still buy it – but is this the main indicator of people’s love?

Foundation “Ballet”

“Ballet” became the first foundation for our grandmothers and mothers. Maybe that’s why they still can’t forget it, even though it feels like a mask on the skin most of the time. The legendary “Ballet” from the Svoboda factory lay in a thick, dense layer, so some diluted it with a regular moisturizer to achieve a lighter texture. Meanwhile, “Ballet” is still available for purchase, albeit in a slightly different package.

Perfume “Red Moscow”

Perfume “Red Moscow”

The most popular Soviet perfume and the desired gift for any occasion was, of course, “Red Moscow”. There is still a legend that this fragrance was created by the chief perfumer of the New Dawn factory, Auguste Michel, specifically for Empress Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova for the anniversary of the House of Romanov in 1913. Another version is that Michel used Chanel No. while developing the perfume. It is based on 5, so Soviet women lined up for an analogue of the famous French perfume. A century later, the aroma pyramid remains unchanged, with notes of coriander, bergamot, clove and vanilla. While some people buy perfume to feel a pleasant feeling of nostalgia, others take it with them as a souvenir.

Cream “Cucumber”, “Nevskaya Cosmetics”

Cream “Cucumber”, “Nevskaya Cosmetics”

The history of Nevskaya Kozmetik company dates back to 1839. Their products were considered one of the best in the USSR and retain their status to this day. Among its bestsellers are “Baby Soap”, which everyone has used at least once, and of course “Cucumber” cream for oily skin. It has a good basic composition to moisturize and nourish the skin. By the way, now in the Nevskaya Cosmetics collection you can find more than ten creams with other active ingredients. For example, carrot, cloudberry or ginseng.

Perfume “Silver Lily of the Valley”

The second most popular perfume of the Union after “Red Moscow” was the perfume “Silver Lily of the Valley”. They were produced (and continue to be produced to this day) by the same factory – “Yeni Şafak”. The light, cool and fresh aroma of “Lily of the Valley” with a touch of bitter greenery reminds us of the joyful times of spring and early summer. The perfume pyramid remains the same: fruity, citrus, woody notes and the lead singer is lily of the valley. And after a while, perfumed shower gel and body cream were added to the perfume. Everything is according to the rules of Western trends.

Gamma hair dye

Gamma hair dye

“Gamma” was one of the few colors available to Soviet women. Therefore, they used it even though it burned the scalp and with regular use, it made the hair dry and lifeless. The composition was very aggressive – it came with hydroperite tablets that had to be diluted. Now “Gamma” has been redesigned both externally and internally – its name has become Latin (Gamma) and the composition is softer and more affectionate. In addition, the paint is valued for its ability to hide gray hair well and for its durability.

Cream “Child”

Cream “Child”

Perhaps one of the most affordable creams was “Child” from the Svoboda factory. The birth year of this product, which is already used by our third generation citizens, was 1954. Meanwhile, the total production of the product to date has exceeded 425 million units. You can still buy it today!

Vaseline “Mink”

Vaseline “Mink”

Vaseline is always a panacea. And if this Vaseline is called “Mink”, then even more so! It has been applied to chapped lips and hands, and has been used to treat skin products and burns. They still do this because “Mink” can still be purchased in pharmacies.
