How to choose your lipstick color?

If you don’t know where to start, try one or more of the following methods to determine the correct color of the product.

by lip color

“Pull your lip back a little and look at the color of the skin inside. If you pick a color that is as close to that shade as possible, there’s a 99.9% chance it will suit you,” says Anna Kartashova, creator and creative director of Annbeauty, sharing a lifehack.

by skin tone

For starters, there are cool and warm skin undertones. How would you describe yours? Turn the inside of your arm and pay attention to the veins – if it’s greenish you have a warm undertone, if it’s blue – you have a cool undertone.

Anna Kartashova advises people with the latter to choose lipsticks of grayish tones, lilac or cherry. And for girls with a warm skin tone, peach, coral and even bright red shades are definitely suitable.

Choose a shade based on eye color as an alternative to undertones. Anna believes that it is better for brown-eyed people to choose burgundy, red, cherry, eggplant and blackberry shades. Green-eyed girls – pink-peach or ripe cherry color. Blue-eyed people can safely look in the direction of pink undertones – these are red and bright red, in general any shade of pink.

“If you’re the owner of snow-white skin, then most likely soft pink tones and glossy textures will suit you,” says Olga Romanova, celebrity makeup artist and creator of the brand Romanovamakeup. – If you choose an overly light matte lipstick, be aware that there is a risk of making your face look pale. But the pink pigment, on the contrary, always refreshes the face.

There are also universal shades of berry lipsticks that suit almost everyone, adds Olga Romanova. “Basically, this is your natural lip shade, only brighter and more saturated. Maybe a little darker (an undertone), but certainly not lighter than your natural colors.

“With a shadow with the texture of a matte pencil or thin matte lipstick (ideally, if the beige-brown tone is in the style of the 90s), outline the lips, trying to slightly increase the volume. Apply color to the contour and center of the lips with the second shade in the texture of the balm. Choose neutral pink or peach tones, they look good on almost everyone,” says Anna Kartashova.

One of the main trends in lip makeup right now is the lack of clear lines. How to repeat, says Olga Romanova:

“Smile a little and draw a line from the center to the periphery, going a little beyond the contour. Shade the entire area with a pencil, blend lightly, and then use your fingertips to apply lipstick over the entire surface. If desired, a slight glossy accent can be made in the middle using a neutral lip gloss. This will visually enlarge them.

Permanent lipsticks need a special approach – the lips should be smooth, without the slightest sign of peeling. “Pay attention to the color of the enamel. If it is not perfectly white, it is better to choose cold soft pink tones. Another important rule is that if you do not want to focus on dark circles under the eyes, you should not apply lipstick with purple and brown undertones on your lips. They can add a tired look to the face. You also need to be careful with shades with brick undertones – they do not have anti-aging effects, so I would not recommend them to more mature girls.

How to choose red lipstick?

Olga Romanova says that red lipstick has the ability to draw attention to the slightest skin imperfections. Therefore, you should first understand if you have dark circles, acne, rosacea or any redness under your eyes. Sure, a concealer can help correct the situation, but you need to soberly consider how this can be resolved. If you understand that red can be used, proceed to the shade selection. “The win-win option is lipstick with a cool undertone,” says Olga. “It is universal for any skin type and also visually brightens tooth enamel and the whites of the eyes.”

“If you chose red lipstick, you better forget about the “no clear lines” lip makeup trend. The most important thing when applying red lipstick is a neat outline. To do this, use a lip liner. And if you want to add sensuality to your makeup and add extra volume to your lips, use a pencil shade one and a half tones darker and a little cooler than the lipstick itself, ”says Olga Romanova.
