Kentucky resident Kendra North woke to an unusual intruder after a massive bear broke into her home in the early hours of August 13 to steal leftover fried chicken from fast-food restaurant KFC.
The predator, estimated by officials to weigh between 230 and 270 kilograms, entered the property at around 5:00 a.m. through a loosely closed door after being attracted inside by the aroma of leftover food remaining on a dining table.

North was asleep inside her residence when the break-in occurred, according to news outlet Dangerous Minds. Her sister, who resides in a neighboring house, was awake at the time and personally witnessed the animal entering and exiting the home.
The sister first heard a sudden loud crash as the bear shattered a glass dining table inside the room to reach the fast-food meal and consume it. The sound of breaking glass was so loud that the sister initially believed a motor vehicle accident had taken place nearby.
Upon spotting the bear exiting the house, the sister immediately attempted to telephone North to alert her to the danger. North declined the incoming call twice before finally answering, at which point her sister informed her that a bear was outside and had just walked out of her home while looking her directly in the eye.
Reactions and Wildlife Warnings
Following the early morning encounter, North admitted that she was less frightened by the presence of the wild predator than she was saddened by the loss of her meal. She explained that she felt particularly upset over losing her takeaway KFC chicken.
John Hast, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, issued a public safety advisory following the break-in. Hast emphasized that wild animals possess high intelligence and will routinely return to locations where they previously succeeded in finding easy prey or leftover food.
To prevent similar incidents, Hast urged residents living in rural communities never to leave food outdoors or in visible areas inside their homes. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is the state government agency responsible for conserving native wildlife populations and managing public safety interactions between humans and wild animals.
Kentucky, located in the southeastern region of the United States, features extensive forested areas and rural landscapes that provide natural habitats for native black bear populations. KFC, short for Kentucky Fried Chicken, is an international fast-food chain originally established in the state, famous worldwide for its fried chicken dishes.
Bear Encounters Across the United States
The Kentucky break-in follows another recent bear encounter reported in the United States, where a brown bear attacked a female jogger in Anchorage. The woman was running alone along a forest trail when the animal targeted her, but she successfully managed to fight off the predator using pepper spray.
Anchorage, the most populous city in the state of Alaska, is situated adjacent to vast wilderness areas where encounters between humans and wild bears are relatively frequent. Wildlife authorities regularly recommend that outdoor enthusiasts carry non-lethal defensive tools such as pepper spray when navigating trail networks in bear country.
