TV Globo has confirmed a sequel to its hit telenovela "Avenida Brasil," bringing back major characters who defined Brazilian television in the 2010s. Viewers will follow new storylines for Tufao (Murilo Benicio), Nina (Debora Falabella) and the show's iconic villain, Carminha (Adriana Esteves).
According to TV Globo, the sequel will bring suspense, comedy and plot twists in a story about "loss, ambition, family and revenge." The premiere is planned for January 2027. Joao Emanuel Carneiro, who created the original story, is returning to write the sequel, this time under the artistic direction of Ricardo Waddington.
"Avenida Brasil" was one of the biggest telenovela hits in Brazilian television history when it aired on TV Globo, and it was later exported to dozens of countries. Carminha, played by Adriana Esteves, became one of Brazilian soap opera's most recognisable villains.
The new storyline
The synopsis released by the network describes events set 14 years after the original story, in the fictional Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood of Divino, where residents now appear to be living in calm. Tufao has become a successful businessman, and his family remains united.
Carminha, after serving years in prison, seems to have become a different person. She earns admiration for social work with vulnerable families, following the deactivation of the landfill once run by her mother, Lucinda.
The former villain grows close to her daughter, Agatha (Karol Lannes), which leads the Araujo family to see Carminha again as a changed woman. Determined to rebuild broken ties, she is welcomed back by her former relatives. The synopsis leaves open the question of how genuine that change really is.
Carneiro on what to expect
In a statement to the press, Carneiro said audiences would be drawn into following how Carminha's return shakes up the lives of Tufao's family and the other characters, especially Nina. He said the sequel was also a chance to return to Divino, meet new faces, see beloved characters again and find out what happened to each of them over the years.
New and returning cast
The sequel introduces a new character, community leader Renan Vitoria, played by Thomas Aquino, who grows close to Carminha. The two go on to develop a complex relationship over who really controls the neighbourhood.
The continuation brings back the actors who made up Tufao's family, alongside new faces in Divino. Jessica Ellen plays Jade, a young woman who dreams of studying genetic engineering in the United States and of leaving a toxic relationship behind. Thalita Carauta will play Salome, a character the network says will bring charisma and comedy to the plot.
TV Globo has set the premiere of "Avenida Brasil 2" for January 2027.
