Adult Swim has released a new trailer for director Hiroshi Nagahama's anime adaptation of Junji Ito's horror manga Uzumaki. The four-episode miniseries premieres September 28 on Adult Swim, with distribution on Max the following day.
The story centers on high school student Kirie Goshima, who lives in the cursed coastal town of Kurôzu-cho in Japan. The series follows the misadventures of many citizens, each of whom seemingly succumbs to a terrible fate in a haunting show filled with nightmarish imagery.
“According to Shuichi Saito, the introverted boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or a being, but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the secret, hypnotic shape of the world.”
Manga adaptation and production details
The project has been in development for several years and is designed to capture Ito's distinctive black-and-white art style. It is based on the iconic manga series by Ito, which ran from 1998 to 1999 in 19 chapters.
The four-episode anime series will also include a soundtrack created by Colin Stetson, who scored Hereditary.
