Endocrinologist Sergey Myasoedov from the Center for Reproductive Health SM-Clinic has outlined the primary reasons why patients regain weight after stopping weight loss injections.
Speaking to news outlet Lenta.ru, Myasoedov explained that one of the main factors behind weight regain following therapy is the return of a patient's natural appetite.
Myasoedov stated that while individuals use these medications, they typically feel full more quickly, experience severe hunger less frequently, and manage portion sizes with greater ease. However, once treatment is discontinued, this appetite-suppressing effect gradually fades away, leading to the return of their original hunger levels.
The endocrinologist noted that the human body undergoes physiological changes as body mass decreases during treatment. Energy expenditure drops because a lighter body naturally requires fewer calories to function, while hunger signals sent by the body may become stronger.
Myasoedov warned that if an individual maintains their previous eating habits or increases their calorie consumption after stopping the medication, a surplus of energy gradually builds up, which ultimately results in weight regain.
Lifestyle habits and long term weight management
A third major factor highlighted by Myasoedov is the absence of long-lasting lifestyle modifications during the course of treatment. He cautioned that if a patient views injections strictly as a quick mechanism for weight loss and does not establish healthy habits regarding diet, physical exercise, and sleep routines, maintaining their weight loss becomes considerably more difficult.
Weight loss injections, which include popular GLP-1 receptor agonist medications originally developed for type 2 diabetes, have seen widespread global adoption for obesity management. Concerns surrounding weight loss medications have previously been raised by prominent public figures who experienced adverse effects during treatment. Jeremy Clarkson, the former presenter of the iconic British motoring show Top Gear, previously shared his experience after taking the diabetes drug Ozempic, stating that his health had deteriorated following its use.
