Police in the United States arrested 77-year-old Gail Giustino after she stole about 100 cats, Fox News reported.
Officers found dozens of cats living in unsanitary conditions inside her home. The temperature inside the building reportedly exceeded 40 degrees, and the floors were covered in a layer of feces. Some cats needed to have hardened feces removed from their paws before they could walk.
Giustino has been cited dozens of times since 2014 for violating animal care rules. She now faces charges of animal cruelty and keeping animals without proper conditions.
Police cite mental health concerns
Law enforcement officials said Giustino sincerely believed she was helping the animals. Police said they hoped she would receive the psychiatric care she needs.
