A 50-year-old Hindu guru from New York has been arrested in Durham, Ontario, after allegedly raping a woman following a religious ceremony.
Police took Rajendranauth Dudnauth Maharaj into custody after the victim reported the assault to law enforcement, according to a report by Indian publication The Tribune.
Ritual Healing Allegation
Investigators said a family residing in Durham, Ontario, invited Maharaj from New York state to perform a religious ceremony at their home. During his visit on August 25, Maharaj persuaded a female member of the family that she was possessed by evil spirits and urgently needed a specialized cleansing ritual.
Maharaj then led the woman to a secluded location away from others. Under the pretense of conducting a spiritual ritual to heal her from evil, he sexually assaulted her, according to police.
Following the incident, the victim reported the assault to Durham police, leading directly to Maharaj being taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
Police Seek Further Victims
Durham police said they suspect Maharaj may have targeted additional victims. Police published a photograph of the accused online and asked anyone who may have been victimized or who holds relevant information to contact investigating officers.
In Hindu traditions, a guru serves as a spiritual master or teacher who guides devotees in religious rituals and spiritual practices. Visiting practitioners frequently travel internationally to conduct ceremonies for diaspora families in private residences.
