The shocking death of football writer Grant Wahl has sparked an outpouring of tributes. Wahl (48) died under mysterious circumstances while covering the World Cup soccer tournament in Qatar on Friday.
Fox Sports, where he worked as a commentator, welcomed him to their World Cup coverage today ahead of the quarter-final between Portugal and Morocco. A visibly shaken Rob Stone greeted viewers at Fox Sports’ studio in Doha, Qatar (see tribute below).
Wahl has caused some controversy in his reporting on Qatar. He wore a rainbow jersey to the USA-Wales game, but the conservative country’s security service denied him entry to the stadium.
Speaking about the election in Philadelphia on Friday, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said he “loves Grant a lot.” Wahl wrote a Sports Illustrated cover story about high school student James, the first major cover of the rising star.
“I’ve always watched from a distance, even as I moved up the ranks and turned pro and he switched to another sport,” James said in a postgame press conference. “Every time his name comes up, I’ll always think back to myself as a teenager and having Grant in our building… It’s a tragic loss.”
Grant Wahl was a loyal colleague and friend to many at FOX Sports.
We remain shocked and saddened by his passing and express our deepest condolences and deepest sympathy to his wife, family, friends and colleagues. pic.twitter.com/PmWVdftKZl
