JoJo Siwa responds to Candace Cameron Bure’s comments that her TV movie Great American Family will focus on “traditional marriage” rather than members of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Honestly, after everything that happened a few months ago, I can’t believe that she would not only make a film with the intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then talk about it in the press. It’s rude and hurtful to an entire community,” Siwa posted on Instagram.
The news received support from Neighbours Totally co-star Jodie Sweetin, who responded to the message, adding: “You know I love you.”
Siwa and Bure had a minor falling out earlier this year when a viral video broke on TikTok Dancing moms alum claims that Totally Actor was the ‘rudeest celebrity’ It turns out that at the age of 11, Siwa attended a red carpet for the Netflix series and asked Neighbors for a photo. Neighbors refused to take a photo with the dancer and continued with other people.
Neighbors contacted Siwa to discuss things and they were able to work things out, with Siwa saying she now understands the pressure of being on a red carpet, but didn’t when she was young.
Bure’s comments were published in a Wall Street Journal article, in which she revealed why she left Hallmark for Great American Family.
“It’s actually a very different network than when we started because of the change in leadership,” she told the publication.
Her comments come as Hallmark diversifies its storytelling and releases its first holiday film starring a same-sex couple. The Holiday Sitter. After Bure’s interview went viral, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) released a statement inviting the actor for an interview.
“It is irresponsible and hurtful for Candace Cameron Bure to use tradition as a cover for exclusion,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “I would like to talk to Bure about my wife, our children and our family traditions. Neighbors does not join a growing majority of religious people, including LGBTQ religious people, who know that LGBTQ couples and families deserve love and visibility.”
Ellis said Bure’s “statement is harmful and offensive to LGBTQ employees, as well as employees with LGBTQ friends and family.”
“If GAF’s plan is to deliberately exclude stories about LGBTQ couples, then actors, advertisers, cable and streaming platforms and production companies should take note and seriously consider being associated with a network that encourages exclusion.” as one of their considerations promotes. values.” Ellis concluded.
