‘We must act now’: Education Minister Pap Ndiaye seeks to strengthen school mix (VIDEO)

As a guest of Quotidien at TMC this evening, Education Minister Pap Ndiaye reiterated his desire to make school diversity a priority.

On October 17, 2022, for the first time and after a court decision, the Ministry of Education published the IPS (Social Position Indices) of each contracted state and private school and college. Not surprisingly, the higher the index, the more the institution welcomes a privileged school population.

If we look at the 300 colleges with the highest IPS in the country, not a single public institution! 97% of schools with an IPS below 90 (ie meeting the least privileged population) are public.

It is a situation that the Minister of National Education and Youth is inclined to reverse. When invited to Quotidien at TMC this evening, the student explains how he wanted to counter the fear of parents: “It requires conviction and pedagogy. But we have to do this because we recognize that diversity is good not only for underprivileged children, but also for others.”

“The work is very, very interesting in that respect, so we need to give momentum to it and at the same time adapt to local realities,” he adds.

The journalist of the program points out that the escape of privileged students to the private sector perpetuates social reproduction. He then asks her how she plans to fight this phenomenon. Pap Ndiaye explains: “The private sector accounts for about 20% of all school students. So the people are still in the majority. Including where special education is well developed”. He adds, “Special education needs to do its part in our initiatives and work on co-education.”

He states that he has already “changed with special education authorities”.

It is ready to “act immediately,” recognizing that advantaged students are fleeing to the private sector. It concludes that “it is time to take action and make coeducational school a priority for this ministry.”
