The World Cup kicks off in Qatar on November 20 and is increasingly coming under the fire of critics. Since 2010 and the attribution of the World Cup organization to the Emirate, the country has sparked a lot of controversy, which grew as the competition drew closer. Qatar has been accused by some NGOs, including Amnesty International, of violating human rights, failing to respect the rights of the LGBT community or mistreating foreign workers. Recently, many voices have been raised around the world to call for a complete boycott of the World Cup in Qatar. Some big cities, including Paris, also announced that there will not be a giant screen in the World Cup due to the tournament held in Qatar.
On the Qatari side, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani took steps to defend his country. Speaking to Qatar’s advisory council, the 42-year-old leader denounced the criticisms his emirate has faced: “Since the 2022 World Cup was awarded to Qatar, the country has been the target of smear campaigns and unprecedented criticism that no other host country has faced.The person who is also known to own PSG believes that the controversy facing Qatar is not justified:We initially approached the subject in good faith and even thought some of the reviews were positive and helpful. But it soon became clear that the campaign tended to continue and expanded to include fabricated items and was so violent that it sadly left many people to wonder about the true motives and motives behind it.“
Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani assured after his speech that the World Cup would make the whole world have a good idea of Qatar: “Hosting the World Cup is an opportunity to express who we are, not only in terms of the strength of our economy and institutions, but also in terms of civilizational identity. Let’s continue to work to raise the name of the nation and open our arms to embrace everyone so that the world can witness the warm hospitality and generosity of the Qataris.“
