After more than a hundred films and a late career race like the most unlikely Hollywood star, Liam Neeson He is exchanging firefights for gags. In the new restart of Paramount of The naked gunNeeson plays Frank Drebin Jr., the irrelevant son of sincere of Leslie NielsenThe iconic detective, entering the impassive chaos of one of the most beloved slaps ever made franchises.
But don’t expect Neeson to approach a parody scholar. As he said to Variety, “I made over 100 films, so I don’t need someone to tell me how to recite”.
In fact, he has not even revisited the original trilogy since he saw them in cinemas decades ago. “They were a good laugh. Fun. Sharehine humor.”
Directed and co-scored by The solitary island Akiva Schafferthe restart of cinemas on August 1 with a cast that includes Pamela Anderson like Beth Davenport e Paul Walter Hauser. It is full of ridiculous vinegar gags, absurd dialogues and yes, at least one puppet of angry snow.
Neeson admits that he has his doubts when Seth MacFarlane He approached for the first time three and a half years ago to face the command. “The comic things I had done were only TV skits,” he said. “But a film-the co-lead in a film for 90 minutes-it was a bit high.”
However, MacFarlane’s involvement convinced him that the screenplay would provide. “I shouldn’t try to be fun. Be serious. I knew there would be many vision gags.”
He did not review Leslie Nielsen’s performances and nobody dared to give him notes on how to play him. “If the producers said I had to take off my hair for the role, I would never have had to do it,” he said firmly. His approach was simple … keep a serious face and let madness happen around him.
Despite the absurdity of the material, Neeson took the work seriously. “They were serious business, of course, to shoot any film and maintain a sense of lightness. It is very important.”
Even during the wildest moments of the film, Neeson and Anderson never broke the character. “We would have tried and chuckled some things, but when we shot it we did what we had to do.”
Working with Anderson proved to be a highlight. “It is exceptional. No wave and thanks, no big ego. It’s there to do the job. It’s just a good human being.” When he was asked of his comment “in love with her” who triggered the titles, he swept him away: “Yes, it was just a launch line.”
Neeson sees the return of The naked gun As timely. “You said it, we live in these times terribly concerning. We all need a laugh and those films have embodied it. So it is an adorable and innocent version.”
It is also pleasantly surprised by the younger audience that responds to the trailer. “My two children told me that they received calls from their friends saying that they thought that the first trailer was very nice.”
This marks the first in full comedy of Neeson, but can report a move from his heavy years. “The first Taken It was 18 years ago. I was 54 years old. I feel like a lifetime. But I am 73 years old, for fuck love. I don’t want to do that stuff with a zimmer frame. ”
While they have still offered him roles of action, he says: “I don’t want to insult the audience if they are looking at entire combat scenes and it’s not me”.
I could The naked gun redefine Neeson so Airplane! For Leslie Nielsen? It is open but put to the ground. “I think so. I hope. I guess it’s all a question mark. Let’s see.” As for multiple sequels, nothing is expected … again. “I think we will wait and see how it behaves.”
And no, it still has no intention of revisiting the originals. “If it were on, I would look at him. But I’m not going to revisit him.”
In a short laughter world, I think it’s time that foolish films come back.
