DEVASTATION WARNING! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode Bachelor in paradise.
This week’s episode of Bachelor in paradise is short because the first hour was taken over by the final The golden bachelor. Read this summary here.
But even though it’s only an hour long, it’s a pretty rambunctious episode.
We pick up where we left off at the cocktail hour before another rose ceremony. The women hand out the roses and after this strange braai the tension rises. Several men are unsure where their roses will come from.
Perhaps the biggest question mark, surprisingly, is Blake and Jess. Last week’s episode ended with Blake questioning his relationship with Jess after seeing Katie in Paradise. He very quickly takes her aside for a chat at the cocktail party, where he says that seeing his ex brought up some “strange” feelings. Natural.
It also reminded him how quickly he had fallen in love with Katie, even though he hadn’t known her for so long. He thinks he and Jess started off well, but things have been rocky for them lately. He doesn’t believe there is a strong bond between him and Jess like between him and Katie, so he doesn’t want to seduce her further.
Surprisingly, Jess agrees. She says it was good at first, but she thinks they stopped having fun at some point. She wanted to get through it, but she also thought that at this point she would be hopelessly in love. She is far from it. She admits she can’t figure out what’s wrong, but she knows something is wrong.
The couple agree to part amicably and Blake leaves paradise before the rose ceremony.
Everyone is pretty shocked by the sudden departure, and Aaron calls it a “wake-up call” for those left behind. He believes there could be a domino effect.
This turns out to be a pretty forward-thinking thought, as Mercedes decides it’s time to have a serious talk with Tyler about what he’s thinking. She’s been re-evaluating their relationship since last week when someone wrote in the truth box that Tyler really didn’t like her that much and everyone could see it. During the cocktail party, she immediately asks Tyler if he’s there to find love or if he’s just looking for an affair. She adds that he hasn’t shown much initiative since their first date and she doesn’t feel like he’s chasing her.
Tyler insists he’s looking for a relationship, but the funny thing is, he doesn’t feel a spark with her yet. She’s quite surprised and feels taken advantage of because Tyler didn’t let her know that he didn’t feel a spark. He tries to apologize by saying that he’s still looking for her and that maybe they have “different definitions” of what a spark is, but she did. She tells Tyler he won’t get her rose and Tyler leaves Paradise.
Another one bites the dust, and people are deeply concerned about this mass exodus to paradise. The remaining men realize they must raise the bar if they want to stay. Jordan, Taylor, Tanner and Brayden are still not sure if they will get a rose.
Rachel seems to be trapped in Jordan. She tells him that there’s no one she’d rather give a rose to after Tanner’s comments at the barbecue (about hoping for Gabby and deciding to settle with Rachel) turn her off. But Jordan tells the others that he’s not sure he can recapture those romantic feelings for Rachel. He even came to Paradise because he was interested in Mercedes, and now that she’s single again, he wants to investigate.
He tries Mercedes, but she still seems shaken by the end of things with Tyler, so it’s unclear what she’ll do.
Meanwhile, Tanner and Brayden are both hoping for a chance with Jess. Brayden brings her a box of chocolates that reminds her of the time she said that was all she ever wanted in a man. Tanner tries to scare her off by telling her that he’s been hoping to get to know her all along, but he respects and admires how loyal she’s been to Blake. Right now, Tanner seems to be all about Jess.
Soon it will be time for the rose ceremony.
It begins quite predictably: Eliza gives Aaron her rose. Then Kat gives John Henry a rose. Kylee offers one to Aven. Olivia gives Michael her rose. Sam goes to Peter. Then Jess gives Tanner hers. Embarrassment for Brayden. Things get even more embarrassing when Taylor thinks she called his name and she has to reject him in front of everyone.
Mercedes is next and changes things when she chooses Jordan. The look on Rachel’s face is shocked, sad and disappointed all at the same time.
As Rachel thinks about what to do, she takes a moment. When host Jesse Palmer asks her what’s going on, she tells him that she has to leave paradise without giving out the rose.
Rachel says goodbye and Brayden and Taylor are both unhappy.
Bachelor in paradise concludes next week with the finale on Thursday, December 7 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
