West Hollywood is considering erecting a nearly 50-foot-tall glass dome over Sunset Boulevard, a smaller version of the Las Vegas sphere that debuted earlier this year.
The West Hollywood Planning Commission’s Sunset Arts & Advertising Subcommittee reviewed the developer’s plan for the Sphere on Sunset during a special meeting Thursday. Unlike its Las Vegas cousin, this space will not be an event venue. Instead, the “Sphere on Sunset” would be a three-story live broadcast venue with a podcast area, a reception area and green rooms. There would also be a roof terrace and media plaza that would be open to the public 24 hours a day.
According to the plans, the proposed area will be between Oliver Avenue and Kings Road, between the Pendry West Hollywood and the Best Western Plus/Sunset Plaza Hotel.
The “Sphere on Sunset” will feature three different digital billboards and cover an area of 2,000 square meters. Some will display advertisements, others may be used by the city for art programs.
According to a staff memo, the developer is also planning an outdoor presentation of the history of the broadcasting and entertainment industry called “The Experience.”
“The circular interactive exhibit will include a historical timeline, images and artifacts for the public to wander through to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of these industries and Sunset’s role in the creation of these industries,” the memo reads.
The ball must float 2.5 meters above the ground. City officials noted that it is still unclear how the massive glass sphere will be supported.
The project must receive a zoning recommendation and approval, which is part of the application package submitted to the full Planning Commission. The bullet proposal will then have to go to the West Hollywood City Council for final approval.
